Gabul is one of the lynch pins for the taliban to formerly inser take over and cobble take over. It's happened nearly everywhere the afghan state has collapsed. The war was sort of lost already, well before the withdrawal. But even afterward, there was hope that the afghan military would stand up and defend their nation.
