What is consciousness? For me, there are two aspects to answering that question. How does something like consciousness exist in an otherwise apparently non-conscious universe? And then there's a function question which is equally important, which is what does consciousness do? The first one is obviously problematic for most people. But I make the case that you actually have to answer them in an integrated fashion.
