Are You Not Allowed to Defend Yourself?

If you are confronted with a threat, that thing that you are connected to is threatening your life. Now it's strange to say to this person whose life is being threatened that you are not allowed to defend yourself. I mean, who doesn't allow some one to defend themselves? So would be totally absurd to tell somebody that they can't defend themselves.
