How to Predict Returns Out of Sample

I would always start with valuation ratios that measure the level of stock prices relative to some measure of cash flow or accounting value on stocks. My preferred ratio actually is the so-called cyclically adjusted price earnings ratio or K-Pratio. Now there are other variables you can look at too to predict returns, but certainly for individual investors, I wouldn't bother with them. There's some evidence of short-run momentum even at the aggregate market level.
