There's no bigger centre of community and social action than the black church here. Even by 19 ten, half of new york's black population lived in harlem. And that's because these new black residents were still vastly outnumbered by white people. So as a result, then black shoppers, for instance, were jected to second class treatment at white owned department stores down on 120 fifth street.
