Bernaldiaz recalls the terrifying noise of these battles. Mexican captains were yelling and shouting night and day, calling to the men in the canoes. The din was so great that we could hardly hear one another speak. When i remembered their hideous deaths, i came to fear death more than ever in the past. Before i went into battle, a sort of horror and gloom would seize my heart.
