Introduction

In 492 BC, Darius decided it was about time that he punished Athens in a retria for their role in the invasion. He also needed to pacify the land approaches to Greece as many cities on the Thracian coastline had revolted. So departing from Solisia, Mardonia sent the army to march to the Hellespont while he traveled with the fleet. The army then started marching along the northern Aegean coast, while the fleet accompanied them.
