The Golden Rule of Habit Change

Charles Higman calls it the golden rule of habit change is to change a habit. The cue in the reward stay the same but the routine is the thing that you want to change. So what we need to start doing here is finding, okay, why do we get up and go for the cookie in the first place? And let's say that you identify the cue at the time of day and then the routine going to get the cookie and then the reward being the social conversation you have with the colleague at the cash register.
