People I (Mostly) Admire

CHAPTER

The Importance of Being Different in the World

I was brought up completely American and as an adult I've traveled a lot. The thing that never ceases to amaze me is how similar people are everywhere almost beyond culture. People are really exactly like you wherever you go. My experience growing up overseas and also in the work that I did is that the world is a lot scarier a place when people can tell you about monsters that you haven't experienced yourself. And I think when we're able to connect based on the hats that we share it doesn't take away from the very legitimate differences that we have but it gives us some common foundation of respect and humanity.
