The Impact of COVID-19 on the Immune System

When COVID-19 first became newsworthy, I had no expectations of what was going to happen. Yet somehow we dramatically underestimated the impact on the immunosuppressed. It really showed very early on, based off the registry data, that people in particularly B-cell depleted people were at high risk of converting from more mild type COVID to CO VID-19 hospitalization or even worse. The presence of type 1 interferons, which are antiviral cytokines, were critical in controlling that transition.
