The Northwest Coast is the only example in the history of the world that we know of where you have been able to create a fully stratified society, everything from kings down to slaves without agriculture. The entire food resource for an entire population is based on these annual grasses and they were able to exploit them with salmon. These social hierarchy set up by salmon are what they could do in the Northwest Coast without agriculture. They did it because of Salmon. And I want to get into some preservation methods in a bit more detail about how people can take advantage of this natural resource.
