In general, at the beginning of my story, i start with reversible decisions and move closer and closer to irreversible decisions. You don't want an irreversible decision at the very end of your story, because if you know what'll happen, people will be really bummed. Those are the ones where the stakes are very high, right? So if the the protagonist, has to choose between saving his son or his wife, that's the worst decision he has to make in the book. I mean, for example, william styren didn't have so sophie make the choice between her daughter or her son at the begin of the novel. He didn't just drop that bomb on page one
