The Path That India Did Not Take

When India became independent in 1947, it had three challenges to meet: increase agricultural productivity, make farmers more productive and create good jobs for a growing population. To meet those challenges, it relies on what you call it an improbable democracy, essentially relying on the wisdom of poor and largely illiterate citizens. But 75 years later, those three challenges are still on that. And not only that, the democracy is maybe no longer a democracy. Some people have said it's basically India is now an elected autocracy and press freedom has been eroded.
