Vernon: The depression that was worse for us, arguably, on multiple different metrics was a depression in the 1890s. We had a searing depression, which was the result of a fabulous land bubble, principally in Melbourne. He says one reason Australians didn't get so out of hand with their housing bubble of the 1920s is they still remembered the experience of the 1890s and lenders were more circumspect.
