Tara Fauchmore is the Tribal Secretary for the Southern Sierra Miwok, one of seven native tribes that lived in Yosemite Valley. They called the valley a wani, meaning gaping mouth, and they had lived here for at least 8,000 years before white people showed up. White settlers praised Yosemite's beauty, but they didn't realize how critical the tribes had been to cultivating it.
