Gretchen grew up in a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant family for better or for worse. On her mother's side, there was a culture of a lot of love and affection, but a hug was a shoulder squeeze. "I have to sort of break through the shoulder squeeze to actually have a full hug with my wonderful loving affectionate mother," she says.
