The History of Numbers
The first instance of negative numbers, which is mentioned in historical accounts, comes from the Greek mathematician, Dialphantis of Alexandria. The great seventh century Indian mathematician Brahma Gupta was one who really figured out how to work with negative numbers. Here are the rules that he created for doing basic arithmetic with negative numbers and zeros.
