On the union side it's the same issue we cannot heal here because if we do that we know that we will be weakened but there is a different context as compared to Thatcher. To some extent Macron is a victim of his own success the manner of his election victory destroying the old parties of the center left and center right has left him with few natural partners. He upended French politics as a new entrant to the political marketplace he shattered the old order but he hasn't really been able to forge a new one or at least not one which is stable.
