Figure 11.5 pointed out one more reason why type one renal tubular acidosis are often more severe acidosis than type two more proximal renal tubular Acidosis. I'd always attributed that to the type two proximal stuff is happening upstream, and there's plenty in ephron left to make it up as you go downstream. But if you have a defect in the acidification of the urine distally, you're going to get significant hydrogen excretion problems. And so you get a significantly worse acidosis from a distal RTA.
