Lower knowledge is everything that you can think of. And shankaracarya goes further, and he says, about all the lower knowledge, he says, avidya hisa, that lower knowledge is no knowledge. It's ignorance. Unless one has actually realized god, whatever you do, whether it is religion, science, art, is still in the realm of ignorance.
