Shukhenko's Story
Shukhenko became acquainted with the Russian artist Karob Rulov who was the most famous artist of his time in Russia. He had recently returned from Italy all in fame with his iconic painting last day of Pompeii. And they organized auction to sell the portrait and to use this money for Shukhenko's freedom. The lottery was hold among the members of the Tzas family to raise the necessary funds. They managed to collect 1000 rubles and the rest, the missing money, it was 1500,. Consequently in 1838, aged 24, Taras Shukhenko was released from Serfdom and he became a female only at his 24.
