What to You Is Defensive Player of the Year?

Kendrick perkins says defensive player of the year is a ward for best player. Is it an award where you're actually supposed to sink in play off performances? Do you consider some of somebody's offensive shortcomings as cause? That seems to be where gobert falls apart a little bit more in the play offs. But i'm saying, how do you force a singular ideology? And then if you do, do you kind of lose the nuance that already exists? I mean, again, looking at n v p voting historically, it's a pretty good representation or collection of something that is actually slightly different than who the best player is.
