People from Black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities are vastly underrepresented in science compared to the general population. Whilst 8% of science undergraduates in the UK are Black, only 0.6% are professors. Maruk Shamim is an advocate for equity diversity and inclusion at the University of Sheffield. She talks about her own experience with a lack of diversity in academia as a Kashmiri woman and an early career researcher.
