If you make an altar of stone, do not build it with carved stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. Make me an altar of dirt. Don't make it pretty. But if you do use rocks, don't carve em. Do not make them pretty. The message that god is trying to get across is that you and i cannot save ourselves. We are too utterly saturated by sin. And doesn't want us thinking that the prettiness of our religion is what saves us.
