If you put one unit of energy into an economy like that, you were generating five units of usable energy out the other side. The amount of surplus energy available in an EROI society with a five to one ratio was basically zero. And so I would argue if you look back over the first 1600 years, you know, from AD1 to 1600, that's why we had such anemic growth. We had basically no energy left over.
