At the age of 12, I did not have either parents who had the ability to guide me, nor resources, nor mentors. And so I had a feeling of hopelessness and despair for obvious reasons. What changed was that when things got particularly difficult at my house, I would get on my bicycle and ride as far and as fast as way as I could. One time I ended up at a strip mall in the U.S., these sort of selection of shops. There was a magic shop there. So I went in and there was a woman there at the counter in her probably mid 50s, early 50s. And she greeted me with a radiant smile.
