The Origins of the Puritan Culture of the South

Greater Appalachia in particular is the center of that movement. This is all settled by the same group of Scots-Irish dominated settlers. They saw government from their own historical experiences back in Ulster and the lowlands of Scotland as being a tyrannical force. It's all about individual freedom and any time you give government any powers, they're going to tyrannize you. The opposite of the orientation of the period and experience.
