In 2007, a boy scout went missing in the North Carolina wilderness for four days when he was finally rescued. He said he was able to survive by applying the woodsmanship principles he learned from the book hatchet. In 2012, school library journal ranked the book 23rd on its list of the top 100 children's novels of all time.
