It takes about as much energy to fuse iron as it releases. All of the radiation pressure that was keeping the star in this big spherical shape goes away almost instantaneously. And so all of the outer layers of the star come crashing down inward and then you get this sort of compactification in the middle. So you get the black hole or neutron star forming at the middle, then you get all of the energy that's released from the supernova.
