In philosophy, thought experiments can help us clarify what we actually believe. For example, pointing to inconsistencies in multiple things that we think we believe simultaneously. In the trolley dilemma, most people say they wouldn't pull a lever if it meant saving five people and killing one. But when you present them with a different situation, that's only formally different from an ethical perspective. Instead of pulling the lever, they would actually have to push somebody in front of the tracks to block the trolley.
