The Implications of Auto-Noetic Consciousness
The ability of the human brain to represent the self as an entity is called auto-noetic consciousness. It allows you to engage in what's called mental time travel, which can help predict future states. Other animals certainly can use past experience to guide their behavior, but in a very limited way.
