The History of Gibraltar
The ancient Greeks considered Gibraltar to be one of the pillars of Hercules. In 710, a Berber army invaded Spain from North Africa under Taric ibn Zayed. This invasion eventually led to the Islamic conquest of the entire Iberian Peninsula. The Muslim rulers controlled Gibraltar for centuries before Christians took over in 1462. Britain kept control of Gibraltar with relative ease over the next few centuries. One exception would be the siege of Gibraltar by France and Spain in the late 18th century. It remained a key part of Britain's empire until the 19th century when it was ceded permanently.
