The Importance of a Small Group
In authoritarianism, and especially in fascism, you need to have an enemy within. That's the enemy within into a secret threat. So they can't just be laughable. This is how authoritarian violence gets framed as self defense. I'm not doing this to harm people. I'm doing this to protect the children. And if you can get some group that you can identify as not only not really American, but as a threat to real Americans then start targeting them. It's one of the classic types of bills to restrict the rights that the religious right class has pushed for years.
