The Side Effects of Opiates
Opiates have a well-known effect on the respiratory drive, and this can be both beneficial and detrimental. A rapid bolus of an opiate can actually cause cough. Fentanyl may actually help bronchospasm as part of a multimodal attempt to prevent it.
