For every matter particle in the Universe, it's possible to create an opposite particle. A particle with almost all of the same properties as the matter particle, except with opposite charge. When matter and antimatter come in contact, they annihilate in a burst of energy. So there's really not much antimatter out there today. But physicists were able to predict the existence of antimatter years before we ever saw an experiment.
