How to Measure Productivity Wastage

Designers often make 'shoot from the hip' statements that are not backed up with data. It's just confusing because we've come so far in manufacturing terms of less 50 years. We're often doing it with a large amount of wastage that we're sitting on, just not kind of acknowledging it. I think there's also a user debt where we build stuff that nobody uses once needs.
