Tolkien knew very early on that to practice his faith was going to mean sacrifice. Being a Catholic in England at that time is very much a minority position. Tolkien chose Exeter College because it was one of the more Catholic friendly colleges in Oxford. It's really hard to portray earnest faith in cinema, Crystal says.
