The Poblem of Spontaneity Versus Grace
The way i think about the relation between effort and grace is as relationality. In order to have a conversation with someone, you have to put forward an effort and put your best foot forward. But once you've said your bit, you can't then coerce the other person into saying what you want them to say. That would not be establishing a good relationship.
