Young's concern about meritocracy was that it ultimately replaces one elite class with another. But a meritocratic value system is even worse in his view, says Chen. Score a high IQ at age five, and you'll be routed towards a high status, high income track. Score low, and while no matter what your dreams and ambitions are, you'll be forced into menial, low wage work. None of these qualities matter in Young's dystopia, only innate, quantifiable intelligence.
