I think people can be made to do hideous things under the influence of others, i certainly think that. But i think what we need to do is have a scepticism about the assumptions that just treat people as though they're entirely passive sheep and all the ame. I want to take it seriously, whilst also drilling down and thinking about people's subjectivities as part of that. Some people go one way, some another. People tell themselves stories to rationalize why they're fitting in. Some people become martyrs and are willing to die. Other people make more cynical bargains with power,.
