The Unknowns of Populist Politics
I've never really been a fan of populist politics. Politics is about actually making hard decisions and then selling them to people. A form of politics which simply says we always do the easy and popular thing in the short term isn't root to successful government. So, so I am concerned about populism. But I'm not surprised because honestly, since I came into frontline politics in the 1990s, I think the attraction of it has dramatically reduced. The deal used to be, you go into politics, you lose your right to privacy, you don’t earn any money but are at least a respected member of the community. Now, you're universally reviled as being worse than estate agents
