The Self-Torturer: A Case Study
The self-torturer has an electric device with a 1,001 settings attached to him. Raising the setting of the device increases the amount of electric current running through his body. The increments in current are so tiny that he can't tell the difference between adjacent settings or at least just to back off a bit. And yet he can easily distinguish settings that are far enough apart. Indeed, there are settings that would take the self-Torturer to a state of excruciating pain.
