The story that you hear most often is a guy named Max Miller like comedian from the early 1900s. He apparently made the phrase up because part of his act was that you have two books. The name itself to your question most likely derives from a guy named Samuel A. Peters who wrote a general history of Connecticut in 1781. Let's wait for the movie to come out. I hear the adaptations going to slap.
