In 1944, right before the end of the war, a lot of people could see this opportunity. Football was a very compelling game. The NFL was only in what I think eight cities at that point in time to really realize it. You had to expand. And they probably would not have realized it except their hand was forced. As we will see a couple of times here throughout the episode, there were wealthy business people who wanted to add teams and come into the NFL.
The NFL — it’s almost synonymous with America today. And its history is a fascinating lens to explore the nation’s development over the last 100 years, from WWII to TV and suburbs to the Internet and social media. What began as a quasi-illicit league in small midwestern towns is now the single largest media property in the world today by revenue.
