The box Cox paper was published in 1964. The results were obtained by using almost all the allowed principles of witchcraft as of the year 1964. They assume continuity, normality, independence, linearity. We've got a whole barn full of new methods where instead of modifying the data to meet the assumptions of the model, we can shrug and pick a different model that these guys didn't have available at the time.
