MIT was host to the Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory, which is also the national high field magnet laboratory. The advent of a tote mac along with the fact that you could make very strong magnetic fields made it possible for MIT to get involved in this kind of work. It's like even the makeup of the people has got this blends of science and engineering in them.
