Every culture, every century has given its members a way of forming an identity. The trouble is, and I'm going to try to show you, every culture doesn't tell you what it's doing to you. It just basically forces a particular process of identity formation on you. And it's always invisible to you unless you go to another culture when you begin to realize, oh this is a whole different way of doing things. Now for most of history, most human beings through history never had the term identity. We have the term because we're so conscious of ourselves as individuals.
