The Popish Plot and the Salem Witch Trials
35 people were executed for conspiracy or treason, including five catholic lords and nine jesuit priests. By 16 81, the increasing doubts around oates and his allegations were solidifying. He seemed more and more discredited. More people were seeing executions of people that they had previously trusted or respected. And eventually, the trials were stopped. But meanwhile, all through these years, from 16 78 onward into the 16 eighties, there was a boiling controversy in parliament.
