I was carried into a cabin and lay there for eight days when I had the crater. After this, she was brought to another house, presumably that of a neighbour. Dan Sheedy and Blake took the corn to kill Rush and sold us. I hid not a bit from my children to eat when they took it from me. And one boy, thirteen years old, died with want and with hunger while we were lying sick. Although it's not surprising, given what she had endured, there was a bitterness in the final comments to James Mahoney as she reflected on that crop that had been harvested and subsequently taken from her.
