The History of the National Lampoon

The National Lampoon initially began as a print publication in 1970, an offshoot itself of Harvard University's revered comedy paper The Harvard Lampoon. John Hughes started writing the short story that would eventually become vacation in the winter of 1979 when he was housebound with his wife and young baby during an especially horrendous blizzard. And then this pre-work from home Zoom era, he took advantage of this unexpected stretch of free time to flesh out Vacation 58 - which is a short story about a Detroit family who takes a disastrous trip to California.
